The best time to travel in Cambodia

The ideal time for visiting Cambodia depends on the region that you want to visit and the activities you want to do. Here are some ideas.

The nicest time to visit Cambodia is between December and February. June is often the hottest month and the rainy season begins in July and lasts until October. However the scenery changes dramatically at different times of the year.

Cambodia is the ideal country l if you want a sporting holiday, because there is something to do all year round! You should note, though, that the months of April, May and June are the least pleasant, because of the intense heat. You can walk, trek and cycle all over Cambodia. If you like water sports then snorkelling and diving are very good on the south coast, and you can kayak on lots of the rivers and even on Tonlé Sap lake.

Even in the rainy season the scenery is magnificent because it is very green, and a little tropical rain from time to time refreshes the air!

The rainy season is particularly tenacious in the greenest region of Cambodia and the nights are fresh and humid between June and September! There are a lot of mosquitoes as well so it is recommended that you visit Mondumkiri and Ratanikiri during the dry season, ideally between November and February. It's also the ideal region for  meeting the local population, and they are the least touristic areas.

Tonlé Sap changes a lot over the year: in the dry season, you can easily visit a floating village and see the bamboo constructions "behind the scenes" which hold up the houses on their stilts! After the rainy season, the water covers these constructions and you have to visit floating villages by boat.

So the floating villages can be visited all year round but the always magnificent scenery varies.

But a lot of the cruises from Siem Reap to Battambang or to Phnom Penh are not available during the dry season because the water level is too low.

The months of April to June are very hot, so visiting the temples is very disagreeable because of the intense heat. The nicest months around Siem Reap are December and January but it's also the time when there are the most tourists. From July to September the temperatures are hot but bearable, and above all there are few visitors!

The air is fresher on the coast than in the interior, so if you choose a hotel with air conditioning you shouldn't suffer too much from the heat. The monsoon months of July to September are quite wet. But it can be pleasant to come outside the season for a special honeymoon, without the crowds of tourists, on idyllic isolated beaches!
