The Devil's Tooth: what's behind the name? Located 3,825 metres above sea level, this rocky outcrop is 12km south of La Paz and comes from a volcano which is now extinct. You can get to it on foot or by jeep from El Pedregal. The Muela del Diablo (as it's known in Spanish) offers great views over the Bolivian capital and its surroundings.
A small community of Aymara Indians chose to live at the foot of the Devil's Tooth. If you're lucky, they might teach you about the fables of the hill. Legend has it that during a battle between the forces of good and evil, a demon was defeated by a heavenly creature and left a molar in the valley which fossilised over time. It's also said that little goblin pranksters live near the Devil's Tooth. But shhh, it's a secret!
