Curahuara De Carangas is a small town with a population of 5,000 located 80km from the famous Sajama Park, the highest park in Bolivia.
Curahuara De Carangas is best known for its beautiful colonial church which dates from the sixteenth century. This sacred place is one of the oldest religious buildings in South America and was declared a National Monument. On the vault of this adobe and straw church, you'll find frescoes representing biblical passages like the Last Judgement or the Last Supper. It's no coincidence that the church in Curahuara De Carangas is known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes. The church is also home to Santiago Curahuara Carangas, the patron saint of the city.
It only takes a few hours to visit the town and its church, so make sure you go there if you're in the vicinity of Sajama.
