The Phajoding monastic complex , visible from the capital, shines at night and sparkles in the daytime. Located on the now very popular Dragon trek (Drukpath) that connects Paro to Thimphu, it is a hike which by clear weather, will reward you with an unrestricted view of Bhutan's very high peaks.
Unquestionably my favourite hike above Thimphu, the small capital, the path is quite uneven and requires you to be in good physical condition. You will reach the Phajoding complex situated at an altitude of 11500 feet after a 1h30 to 2h30 walk depending on your load and physical fitness. Make a stop to get acquainted with the monastery's young monks. They will be glad to receive you for a cup of yak milk tea or a good glass of cold water. 
If the weather and your schedule allow it, keep going until you reach the temple situated on the side of the cliff above which is a small Chorten (allow 1h30 more). When you reach the Chorten, you will have passed the altitude mark of 13000 feet, a heady experience doubly rewarded by a singular view of Thimphu, the peaks of eastern Bhutan and Dochula Pass.
