I recommend a stop at Vientiane mainly to those who wish to take a break during the long journey between the north and the south of the country.
Lying on the border with Thailand, Vientiane is the capital of Laos.
My suggestion
The Pha That Luang, which is the symbol of Laos, is well worth the visit. The huge reclining Buddha located behind it is certainly impressive. The easiest way of getting there from the city centre is by tuk-tuk.
Vientiane is not only the capital but it is also the the most modern city of Laos. Cultural visits, restaurants and walks are all on the agenda!
My suggestion
A good way to visit Vientiane both quickly and pleasantly is by bicycle!
Compared to other Asian capitals, Vientiane is incredibly peaceful and quiet. The town seems to live to the gentle rythym of the Mekong, which laps the fringes of the town.
My suggestion
Hotels in Vientiane are quickly booked up. So reserve a room in advance if you're likely to arrive late in the day.
