If you want to immerse yourself in Russian culture then there's nothing better than spending a few days in Yekaterinburg, Russia's 4th largest city !

My suggestion:
Apart from a few young people and hotel keepers, no one speaks English. So take an English-Russian phrase book with you!
Summary:

Although it is situated in the Urals, where European and Asiatic influences meet, the town is profoundly Russian in its soul.

When I was arriving by train few things drew my eye, other than industrial detritus and sombre buildings. Which you see everywhere in Russia. Apart from the fact that it was difficult to find my youth hostel (which is also a constant), the town seemed like a great place to pretend that I was in a different world. I didn't understand the signs and everyone looked at me a bit sideways!

There are things to visit, such as the On the Spilled Blood church, the Ural Geological Museum, an opera and concert house, and the Shirokorechenskoe Cemetery. So Yekaterinburg is a good place to stop during a trip to Russia, especially if you are travelling on the Trans-Siberian.
