Nestled in the forelands of the Carpathian Mountains, the small region of Sandomierz is charming. Aside from the lovely town of <a href="/poland/">Sandomierz</a>, the castle of Baranów Sandomierski ("the sheep of Sandomierz") is a little gem with Italian influences. This late-Renaissance castle (late 16th/early 17th Century), erected towards the north of the Vistula river, has certainly retained its grandeur. The castle is well worth a visit, if only to see the beautiful courtyard with its arcades.
For me,though, the highlight of Baranów Sandomierski is the castle's landscaped formal garden, which is particularly opulent and well-maintained. With its boxwood hedges, its gardens and its paths lined with hundred-year-old trees, this is a truly splendid corner in the upper Vistula valley.
