The city looks out over the Baltic Sea and boasts a superb historic centre, made up of red brick houses with pointed roofs and ancient landing stages which have witnessed the city's glorious past, when Gdansk, or Danzig in German, was one of the major ports of this region of Europe.
It was a real pleasure to stroll the ancient paved streets of Poland's fourth city, and to rediscover the same ambience and architecture that can be found in the Hanseatic cities of northern Germany, such as Hamburg and Lübeck. In addition to this, I particularly enjoyed the friendly, easy-going atmosphere of the city, with its various museums, religious sites, and cafes and restaurants which fill up with revellers each evening.
Overall, I would highly recommend Gdansk as a must-see city on any trip to Poland.
