Formalities for going to Norway

Before You Go

Norway has always refused to join the European Union, and as a citizen of the UK, you will need a passport to enter the country. If your passport describes you as a British Citizen you won’t need a visa to enter Norway. So it will be very easy to plan your next trip to Norway. As a citizen of the UK, you will need a passport to enter Norway. As long as your passport describes you as a British Citizen, you do not need a visa to enter. Norwegian authorities will accept British passports extended by 12 months by British Embassies and Consulates under additional measures put in place in mid-2014. For stays of longer than 3 months, contact the Norwegian Embassy for further information about entry requirements. UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are accepted for entry, airside transit and exit from Norway. You can renew or replace your passport at any time. It costs £72.50, or £82.25 through the Post Office’s Passport Check and Send service. You should expect the process to take 3 weeks. Although no vaccines are required to enter Norway, it is recommended that your universal and conventional vaccines be up to date.

If you decide to explore Norway freely by your own means, even if your national driving licence is sufficient by all logic, it is always better to provide your international driving licence to a rental agency. To get it, nothing could be easier. You can apply for it through the Post Office, at http://www.postoffice.co.uk/international-driving-permit. It costs £5.50 and is valid for 12 months.

As you've seen, even though Norway is not part of the European Union, the European Health Insurance Card is accepted there. You can apply online for an EHIC, which is free of charge, at https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do. Expect the card to arrive within 7 days after your application is submitted.
