The possibility of visiting cities by foot through your trip in New Zealand should be considered. The train doesn't stop much in cities and will only interest those who are passionate about them. Boats are only interesting for crossing bewtween the northern and southern islands.

For those wishing to not waste time on transport methods, they should opt for flying. Flying isn't the most economical option but it is there is no better option if you are pressed for time.
