During my <a href="/jordan/">journey to Jordan</a> I hitch hiked right up to the entrance of the site at Bethany. After that, however, there was no question of bending the rules: I could only enter with an official guide. To get as far as the site, I had to give the names of El-Maghtas or Wadi Kharrar, which are better known than Bethany.
