The East Fjords are a little known region, we often stop before, at the Jokulsarlon on route 1, where you can experience these places in a short amount of time. However, the view of the fjords can be amazing, and some places deserve that you take the time to discover them.

Between sea and mountains: the East Fjords 

Grimsey is a small Icelandic island situated about 25 miles north of Iceland and the arctic polar circle runs through it. The spot is also ideal for watching bird colonies.

Only open when the centre of the country is no longer under snow, Route F35 is one of the most legendary in Iceland: rocky and wild, it winds its way through the most desolate and mountainous regions of the island. An exceptional road trip of discovery during the summer months!

The peninsula of Snæfellsnes, made famous by Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, contains most of Iceland's magnificent landscapes and is just a few hours' drive from the capital. In one day—or two, if you have the time—, you can discover superb panoramic views and various natural places of interest.

Dyrholaey is a promontory located not far from Vik in the south of the country, which from the top of its cliffs offers a staggering view of the surroundings, especially an impressive arch in the middle of the sea.

I first came to Dyrholaey promontory a few years ago and at the time the road was not tarred and was in quite bad condition.  This is now a thing of the past, however, for nowadays it is very easy to get to Dyrholaey thanks to a lovely tarred road that climbs all the way to the top of the cliffs. From there, it is possible to walk up to a small, squat lighthouse and to admire the view overlooking the whole of the south coast as far as the eye can see. The only snag: the place is often subject to strong winds which prevent you from getting too close to the cliffs for safety reasons.  Another path leads down to a pebble beach, but here again you must be careful as the waves are huge and sometimes come and lap against the cliff face.  In spite of all this, it remains <a href="/iceland/">a very pleasant visit</a> when the weather is fine and the arch set down in the middle of the sea is magnificent. In summer, apparently, it is possible to go on an excursion out there by boat, but I have not tried it yet.
