The East Fjords are a little known region, we often stop before, at the Jokulsarlon on route 1, where you can experience these places in a short amount of time. However, the view of the fjords can be amazing, and some places deserve that you take the time to discover them.

Between sea and mountains: the East Fjords 

Grimsey is a small Icelandic island situated about 25 miles north of Iceland and the arctic polar circle runs through it. The spot is also ideal for watching bird colonies.

Only open when the centre of the country is no longer under snow, Route F35 is one of the most legendary in Iceland: rocky and wild, it winds its way through the most desolate and mountainous regions of the island. An exceptional road trip of discovery during the summer months!

The peninsula of Snæfellsnes, made famous by Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, contains most of Iceland's magnificent landscapes and is just a few hours' drive from the capital. In one day—or two, if you have the time—, you can discover superb panoramic views and various natural places of interest.

Breidafjordur is a vast fjord that one goes across by ferry. This sea journey spares you a good distance of bends and winding roads to access the Western Fjords. You must count 2 hours 30 for the crossing which allows you to contemplate at will the massive mountains which all seem really small from here, but which turn out to be impassable walls once you are on land. If you have a car, you must book in advance, especially in summer when the crossing is popular.  I made this crossing from Brjanslaekur and the drive to get there took so long that I feared I would not arrive in time to catch the boat. Moreover, my level of petrol was low and as there are not many people in this part of the island, I was a little scared of running out of petrol in the middle of nowhere before getting back to civilisation! Breidafjordur counts numerous islands, some being more like big rocks, but one of them, however, deserves a stop: Flatey. Lovers of birds and peacefulness will particularly appreciate this stop while on their <a href="/iceland/">Iceland trip.</a>
