Although I had read a certain amount of information on the place, I didn't think I'd have such a fascinating experience going to the Petexbatun L^=agoon during my <a href="/guatemala/">trip to Guatemala</a>. Upon leaving the town of Sayaxche, we hired a small "lancha" (motorboat) to go down the Pasion River peacefully, far from any human activity. Just as Pocahontas ascended the river, we too felt all alone in the world in this primary jungle. After some 50 minutes of sailing, we passed the bungalows of a lodge, then we finally reached a wider space, in the middle of which the little island of Punta Chiminos stood out. Punta Chiminos Island forms the major attraction of the beautiful Petexbatun Lagoon and allows visitors to enjoy a unique experience. As if the boat trip wasn't magnificent enough, it was mere fact that I spent a night in such wild and isolated surroundings which had an impact on me. Petexbatun offers the opportunity to sleep in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by howler monkeys, to go kayaking or to visit one of the Mayan archaeological sites located nearby.
