Situated on an island in Petén Itzá, Flores  is a superb, little town. At 1hr from Tikal, it's the perfect base from which to explore these famous Mayan temples.

Its proximity to Tikal is an advantage, but that's not all that Flores has to offer. If so many tourists stay here during a <a href="/guatemala/">trip to Guatemala</a>, it's because Flores is, quite simply, a gorgeous little town. It's touristy but I still loved its narrow, paved streets, the brightly coloured houses and its welcoming people. To escape Flores's scorching heat, I suggest you join the local kids and head down to the banks of the lake, where you can cool off in its fresh water. It's not just revitalising, but also a good way to meet the incredibly friendly inhabitants. In brief, I ended up in Flores as I was on my way to Tikal, but loved the town all the same.
