Situated on an island in Petén Itzá, Flores is a superb, little town. At 1hr from Tikal, it's the perfect base from which to explore these famous Mayan temples.

My suggestion:
From 6th to 15th January, the town holds a fun festival celebrating its patron saints and which breaks the silence that usually rules over the place.
Summary:

Its proximity to Tikal is an advantage, but that's not all that Flores has to offer. If so many tourists stay here during a trip to Guatemala, it's because Flores is, quite simply, a gorgeous little town.

It's touristy but I still loved its narrow, paved streets, the brightly coloured houses and its welcoming people. To escape Flores's scorching heat, I suggest you join the local kids and head down to the banks of the lake, where you can cool off in its fresh water. It's not just revitalising, but also a good way to meet the incredibly friendly inhabitants.

In brief, I ended up in Flores as I was on my way to Tikal, but loved the town all the same.
