A town carved into the rockface, Vardzia resembles a human warren albeit it in stone.

My suggestion:
Even if you're told to visit Vardzia from the neighbouring towns of Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi, I suggest you stay here - I for one felt that I didn't have enough time to fully explore the site.
Summary:

I had a hard time believing that this historic site was once a thriving town and not just a few hand built dwellings and monastery. Coming here's an incredible experience - a mountainous warren where thousands of people once lived in communities that were as socially and economically well organised as our own.

The main attractions are the churches, which are carved into the rock and boast some amazing rock art. I spent my time there wondering how such a town could have been built! In any event, my visit to one of the most incredible sites in the country was very informative, one that I highly recommend during a holiday in Georgia.
