As I was told when in Omalo, the little capital of Tusheti, "If you want to be blown away, go to Dartlo!" As I was already blown away by these highlands, I was interested to see what they meant...
Arriving alone on foot, I headed along the Pirikitis Alazani and all I can say is I wasn't disappointed. Clinging to the steep slope that led down to the river, I saw an amazing sight of beautiful ruins and incredibly well preserved and restored houses, with flat stone walls and balconies carved in typical Georgian style. In short, Dartlo rocks. Its two towers resemble living giants and those in ruin have silhouettes that look the ghosts of shepherds...
As far as the hospitality of the Tushetis goes, they're worthy of their reputation. As soon as I set foot in the town, I was plonked down in an easy chair on a balcony to toast life, friendship, love and nature. I highly recommend Dartlo!
