I discovered Diklo when arriving from Chenako, on my last leg across Tusheti's Tchaghma. The road stops here - you need military permission to get in to the border zone that lines the Daghestan range. Military personnel rub shoulders with shepherds all year round in this area.
Even if it's not the prettiest town in Tusheti, Diklo is a great place to go hiking. Nestled in a green valley, livened up by a sawmill during summer, it's pleasant and cool.
Its archaeological heritage is also noteworthy. You'll see the ruins of numerous defensive towers; not so long ago, every house had one. You can understand why, when you think that less than a century ago, neighbouring Dagestani fighters were still raiding Georgia. The shepherds' houses, with their flat stones cemented together, are also architecturally impressive. I loved having a picnic in the serene surroundings of the town!
