All the exquisite beauty of the Corsican coast should not stop you from exploring further inland. Despite being relatively small (184km from North to South) Corsica has for a long time harboured a culture that looks towards the mountains rather than towards the sea. For this reason locally sourced products such as sausage, cured meats, cheese and chestnuts, make up the main ingredients for Corsica’s culinary specialities. It is just as easy to see that Corsican culture is built upon the pride of a people that has successfully overcome the harshness of life in the mountains rather than upon a maritime or commercial way of life. Therefore, to experience the real Corsica, you must venture into the hills and cross the winding roads which link together villages that are perched upon the mountainside. Here, far from the beaches, right at the heart of the island, lies the town of Corte, the cultural capital of Corsica with its university and intellectual life at the cutting edge of autonomist thinking, as well as its austere side which displays another side to the island. Do not forget that in the 18th Century, having been independent for some decades following many years of Genoan rule (and before it became French) Corsica was the only state in the modern era to boast of a democratic constitution!
