Propriano has long been a popular place, as the various ancient ruins to be seen in the local area testify. The town and its port, which are located in the gulf of the same name, have been constructed in the natural shelter provided by Scoglio Longo, a local rocky promontory. the town is today modern but its small, historic centre has been preserved. It is precisely the aforementioned peaceful harbour aspect of Propriano that compelled me to spend an extra day here, and that's without even mentioning the wonderful beaches I discovered in the area, which are among the most beautiful you are likely to encounter anywhere when visiting Corsica. Though there are many to be found in the local area, the ones I particularly remember are those of Portigliolo, Campomoro and Baracci, all three of which are peaceful and idyllic. The inland region is also equally impressive, with its green, verdant hills and peaks, from where it is possible to look out over vast slopes of maquis scrubland extending right down to the turquoise sea.
