The cities of Armenia, Pereira and Manizales form what Colombians call the “Coffee Triangle”, and going there is a must during your stay in Colombia. Armenia is lavishly surrounded by lush green mountains covered with coffee plantations (and banana trees that quite often accompany them). It sits at 4850 feet above sea level, and it has a relatively temperate climate. I've noticed that often cities in the coffee region do not have very interesting architecture and there's a reason for that: many of them have been destroyed and then rebuilt after various earthquakes. That's the case with the city of Armenia. However, you should still take the time to stroll around the large Botanical Garden located approximately 2 1/2 miles from Armenia, and enjoy this haven of peace where the flora and fauna are plentiful. Among other things, you'll see many species of palm trees, ferns and heliconias (flowering plants), as well as various birds. The highlight of the show is the main butterfly house or "Mariposario", very well-known in Armenia, reserved for butterflies and is in fact in the shape of a butterfly.
