We spent nigh on a two weeks in the Columbian Amazon. It would be a real shame to miss out on touring this jungle, with its colours, animals and piranhas!
We loved going down this gigantic river! After having stopped at the market in Leticia to stock up on a hammock, big bin liners, a spoon and a plate (essential boat kit!) we climbed aboard. We strung up our hammock, put our bags in the bin liners (it often rains and it helps guard against theft) and settled into our allocated slot.
It was amazing to watch such glorious sunrises and sunsets from the boat and the clear skies meant we were blessed with star-filled nights. Every day was different. We were able to meet locals, who were intrigued by our tourist look and weren't at all shy about coming forward.
One lasting memory: when the boat entered one of the river's tributaries, at the point where it narrows, we saw houses spring up everywhere. Suddenly everyone on board started throwing packets of powdered milk into the river, so that the locals in canoes could pick them up and take them home.
The Amazon is a truly unforgettable experience and if you have the time, it's one not to miss!
