During my holiday in Colombia, this 'break from a break' in the Tayrona National Natural Park allowed me to completely unwind, far from any hustle and bustle. I was lucky to be there at the end of April, i.e.off season. During the high season the park can seem a bit crowded and less tranquil.
I love life in a hammock and in that respect my dreams came true. At night, jungle noises blend with the sound of running water; it lulls you to sleep and lets you switch off from the world. The camping area is covered so it doesn't matter if it rains.
I spent four days there, so as to make the most of all the beaches. During one of my walks along the coast I spotted a cayman that was lazing by a stream, so keep your eyes peeled. On that note, don't worry about going for a swim in the sea - it's not dangerous.

The Tayrona National Natural Park was the most anticipated part of our trip to Colombia. We had heard a lot about it from the various travellers we had met on our travels through South America and all of them were in agreement that this natural park was not to be missed. We took their advice and it paid off. Tayrona Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
We started off travelling by jeep, but we finished up on foot in the middle of the jungle, following the route that was cut out and which led all the way down to the beaches where the majority of the ecolodges are located. It was a great introduction to the jungle, with all the little sounds creating a tropical atmosphere.
In the end, a lot of movies came to our minds, being the lost adventurers that we were: Indiana Jones, Cast Away and even Lost! The water was choppy, so we contented ourselves with watching the waves from the white sand which runs along the row of palm trees. We spent three days living in a postcard photo. It was a little slice of preserved paradise, not too touristy and the kind of where place you wouldn't mind living your entire life.

Tayrona National Natural Park is 1 hour away from the city of Santa Marta, on Colombia's Caribbean coast. It's a true oasis of calm and the lush natural beauty is perfect for going exploring and lazing around on the beach.
