Lying 700 kilometres off the Colombian coast, this archipelago was once the lair of famous pirates. San Andrés, the main island, is today a popular resort attracting tourists from all over the world. Providencia itself is famous for the astonishing colour of its sea, which, according to the locals, can take on any of seven different shades, all distinguishable by the naked eye. Providencia's coral reef is the second largest in the world, making it an ideal destination for not only scuba divers, but also for fans of all kinds of aquatic sports. With its hills and barrier reef, Providencia's forest is especially beautiful. It's all part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. I remember going on some wonderful and unforgettable walks when I came here during my trip to Colombia.

This is the very epitome of a picture-postcard destination. Deserted white sandy beaches, lush vegetation, pleasant walks: everything required to seduce the visitor in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation is to be found on the island of Providencia, When I visited, I rented a scooter so I could get around via the island's roads. I went to see Morgan's Head, climbed up to visit the statue of the Virgin Mary on the summit of "El Pico", which dominates the whole island and offers simply unforgettable views, and walked along the paths and crossed Lover's Bridge to neighbouring Santa Catalina. I also went to Agua Dulce (Fresh Water Bay) and stopped for a break near a pretty boat set up for children to play on and where there were raised, mosaic-covered models of fish, a crab and an iguana to be seen all around. At the back was a tower, symbolising the lighthouse that watches over the sailors. Once again, this was yet another charming place. Equipped with flippers, mask and a snorkel, I explored the stunning underwater environment, where I saw turtles, common stingrays, a multitude of brightly-coloured fish and even some dolphins. In the evenings, I watched and admired the sun setting over Providencia as I sipped a cocktail in one of the many bars located along the shore.
