Rio Lauca is a river spanning 140 miles, and flows from Chile to Bolivia. Its source is at Laguna Cotacotani, which lies within the borders of Lauca National Park in Chile's Arica and Parinacota region, and empties into Lake Coipasa in Bolivia, just next to the Salar de Coipasa salt flats.
What's particularly special about Rio Lauca is that it passes through Lauca National Park and Sajama National Park, which happens to be one of the most beautiful national parks in South America. I really enjoyed having the chance to see Andean wildlife, such as vicuñas, rheas and condors, as well as visiting and exploring Laguna Chungara and the twin volcanoes of Pomerape and Parinacota in the Chilean national park. And at Sajama National Park next to the Bolivian border, I visited the famous Nevada Sajama volcano and the Salar de Coipasa salt flats, which are a few tens of miles away.
