Head to <a href="/bolivia/">Sajama National Park</a> to discover the majestic Parinacota Volcano, with an altitude of 6,348 m, next to Pomerape Volcano. Covered in ice and stalagmites, Parinacota has the particularity of being located both in Chile and in Bolivia.
Located approximately 4 hours from La Paz by road, the volcano isn't in a very touristy area. Moreover, travellers who want to attempt its climb are rare. It has to be said that it's located at an altitude of more than 6,000 m, all the same! The road to get there is also reputed to be not very accessible, due to the steep climbs and the sand which covers it.
If you want to attempt your first 6,000 m, choose Huayna Potosi instead, which has an "easier" reputation. Count on at least 2 days to climb the volcano and come back down. Headaches, cold and intense pains will be your companions on the trip. And yes, the climb up Parinacota is reserved only for great athletes!
