I loved my stop in the town of Sucre during my <a href="/bolivia/">stay in Bolivia,</a> but after a few days in the white citadel I was ready for other adventures. After a visit to the tourist information office, I decided that my next destination would be the Maragua Crater.
I was up the next day at dawn. After an hour and a half by bus we arrived in the picturesque village of Chataquila. After a quick visit to the village chapel we took a portion of the Inca Trail that connects the villages of Chataquila and Chaunaca. Colourful valleys unfolded before our eyes over a distance of around ten kilometres. We also caught a glimpse of the crater. The guide explained to us that nobody knows the origin of Maragua Crater. A fallen meteorite perhaps, or tectonic plates? The mystery remains...
After a picnic break, we reached the village of Maragua, located in the heart of the crater. It was the opportunity to meet with the local population. Unfortunately, communication was difficult because they only speak Quechua! Our guide acted as interpreter. Our last stop was at the Devil's Gorge before getting back in the minibus for Sucre.
