With Yumani to the south, and <a href="/bolivia/holidays/places/2533-cha-llapampa/">Challapampa</a> to the north, Challa is one of three villages on the famous Isla del Sol. The small lakeside hamlet is home to 2,000 inhabitants who make their living largely from fishing, crafts and tourism.
Overlooked by the snowy peaks of the Cordillera Real, and surrounded by Lake Titicaca, Challa is a peaceful place. We travelled to this community from Yumani. As soon as we arrived, we noticed the sweet stupor which prevailed in the village. Only the presence of Bolivian children playing (and, let's face it, a few tourists) disturbed the peace of the village. Sheep and pigs live alongside each other on Challa's beautiful white sand beaches which was quite amusing to see!
After going for a short walk on the island, we decided to take a trip to the museum in Challa where we learned more about the Inca culture (the village is known to be the birthplace of the Inca civilisation). Just like we did in Copacabana, we decided to have some delicious trout for lunch. And then? A nice little siesta on the beach!
