A fishing port on the southern coast of Australia in the state of Victoria, Port Fairy is one of Australia's most charming coastal towns.

My suggestion:

Come in summer to make the most of the sea, although the town is lovely in all seasons.

Summary:

Before coming to Port Fairy, I was despairing of ever finding a port town that would remind me in some way of our charming French ports. Port Fairy convinced me completely. It is an adorable little town situated a few kilometres to the west of the end of the fabulous coastal road Great Ocean Road. Port Fairy has an adorable port, as well as many historical houses that make the small town centre absolutely charming.

Port Fairy is certainly not a must-see stopping place for a stayon the Australian continent, but if you are in the area on the way from Adelaide to Melbourne, it is a perfect place to stop, especially as you will find magnificent beaches just outside the town and—not far off—the famous tourist attraction The Twelve Apostles.
