Gwangju organises a 3 month long contemporary art festival every two years called the Gwangju Biennale. The city holds art in great esteem and has several important museums, just as much about folklore as about modern art. 
The May 18th National Cemetery is a memorial dedicated to the victims of repression in the democratic revolution that took place in 1980. There's also a little museum which retraces the events of the revolution. 
The Mudeungsan national park, about an hour to the east of the city, is a paradise for walkers; one day there allowed me to see several things. If you're not prepared for walking, go there anyway, the Buddhist temples which are a quarter of an hour away by foot from the bus station are worth the visit.
