Two major cities will mark your trip: St Petersburg and Moscow. “Peter”, as it affectionately called by those who love St Petersburg, is a water city, marked out by canals and by the Neva as far as the banks of the Baltic. Modern, European, dotted with elegant architecture and also traces of the socialist era, the city is joyous and colourful. In winter it dons a magnificent white overcoat and in summer the sun never drops too low. You will be enchanted by its churches, cathedrals and rich museum collections, led by the Hermitage. In Moscow, a change of ambiance: large, noisy and in a word lively, it is worth the detour, if only for its social and economic dynamism and the major position it occupies in Russia’s history. Walk up and down the Red Square, have a hot chocolate in the mythical Pushkin café, set off on the trail of the numerous writers and artists who have lived in the capital… Your travel experiences will be wonderful and varied. You will also spend time discovering the Golden Ring, the collection of towns situated to the north east of Moscow that were once royal and today still bear awe-inspiring traces of this architectural, historic and religious heritage.Continue reading
