Tatra National Park is located in the centre of the country and serves as a kind of natural barrier between the more prosperous West and the economically more underdeveloped East. The landscape and scenery of the park is utterly beautiful. Its dizzying summits, though reaching heights of "only" 8,500 feet, are made particularly steep and impressive by the absence of any foothills. Quite a small national park considering the number of mountains it contains, in summer it offers incredible opportunities for hiking, with something to suit walkers of all levels and abilities, and the ski slopes here in winter are excellent. It is also famous as a natural reserve for wild plants and animals , with Tatra National Park home to one of the highest concentrations of bears in Europe. Definitely one of the essential places to see and visit in Slovakia.
