Djebel Shams (Oman)

Jebel Shams is one of the Gulf’s highest peaks. Although it's relatively isolated, the road that starts in the village of Al Hamra is good, and it allows access to the summit without too much difficulty (except at the end of the trip where the road turns into a trail). As the road is good, not too crowded, and wide, it's possible to stop for picnic, admire the valley below, or simply to daydream.  

At the end of the trail, a parking area lets you know that you've arrived. There are a few people who live there that sell souvenirs and crafts. You have to pass these various stalls to access a hiking trail that runs along an impressive gorge. This path is not too difficult and you can catch a ride back at any time if you feel tired. All along, the almost lunar landscape is really breathtaking. You may even see some hawks circling above the precipice. For those who love hiking and nature, Jebel Shams is really a must-do on a stay in Oman.
