Situated at the extreme north of South Island in New Zealand, the area around Golden Bay is perfect for anyone looking to relax and unwind, as well as those of you who enjoy short hikes. Around Farewell Spit, a sandy coastline, you'll find lots of small trails that lead to hilltops with breathtaking, panoramic views. The surroundings vary along the way and I left sandy beaches for steep cliffs via green hills, complete with herds of long-haired sheep.
As the saying goes 'no pain, no gain', so on your way back I suggest you stop at Collingwood, a market town where you can sit down and sample some Samoan chocolate.
Known as a magnet for alternative lifestylers, Takaka is an atypical town. It's charming and welcoming with numerous coffee shops/watering holes where you can grab a bite to eat. Close to town are the Te Waikoropupu Springs - natural springs with crystal clear waters that shimmer above a turquoise bed.
