Not far from Wellington, Martinborough is a city dedicated to wine.
My suggestion:
If you are a lover of this sweet nectar of the gods, plan to visit a few local producers! In this case, it's best to ride a bike there to enjoy the wine and call a taxi for the ride back!
Summary:
Two roads go to and from Wellington, one along the sea and the other inland. The inland road is the one that goes through Martinborough. I must say that I have a weakness for the other road, especially for a stop at Kapiti Island, a natural reserve set aside for birds including the kiwi.
Martinborough is an interesting town for those who love wines and good vintages, a little like the region of Marlborough on South Island. The town is quite rural and one of its characteristics is the sheep shearing that is the town's pride and joy. Moreover, the visit to the Wool Shed Museum left me astonished!
Finally, if you love nature, Lake Wairarapa is a pretty swampy area, but it offers a few nice walks anyway.
