What to put in your suitcase when travelling in Mauritius

Anyone who's visited Mauritius will tell you the same thing: it is a wonderful, heavenly destination. White sandy beaches lined with palm trees, turquoise-blue seas: pack your suitcase post-haste and get ready to turn the dream into a reality.

As far as clothing is concerned, you won't need anything other than your trunks/swimming costume. All the equipment you need to go diving and explore the seabed, such as masks and snorkels, can be hired locally. Don't go to the unnecessary trouble of bringing these items with you. On a more serious note, you will also need light clothing to keep you comfortable in the heat and long clothing that covers your arms and legs if you intend to visit religious sites. These latter items will also come in useful in protecting you from the voracious appetite of the mosquitoes that emerge once the sun goes down.

Include the usual plasters, bandages, ointments etc. in your first aid kit so you have something to treat everyday cuts and bruises. You will also need a mosquito repellent, something to treat travellers' diarrhoea, and sun cream to protect you against sunburn. It goes without saying that you really don't want to end up spending the entire stay holed up in your hotel room looking as red as a lobster. So do take sun cream or some after sun lotion. Which of these you choose is up to you!

You will get the opportunity to take some wonderful photos to keep as souvenirs of your visit during your trip to Mauritius. Remember to take a camera or camcorder with you therefore, and of course enough memory cards to store everything on. Though you hopefully won't need it, make sure you have a photocopy or scan of your passport with you. It will be of great help with the administrative process you will need to go through should you happen to lose the original. Rather than carrying a large amount of money with you, it is more secure and above all more practical to carry a credit card and use it to withdraw money as you need it instead.

What to include in your suitcase:

  1. A camera or camcorder for taking photos and filming videos, including under water.
  2. A credit card: essential for withdrawing money and paying for things
  3. A photocopy or scan of your passport: very useful if you lose the original
  4. Something with which to treat the kind of stomach upsets all travellers are only too familiar with
  5. Sun cream so you can sunbathe with peace of mind
  6. Mosquito repellent to fend off the hungry insects
  7. A first aid kit to treat everyday cuts and bruises
  8. Snorkelling equipment, though this can be hired locally
  9. Trunks or a swimming costume, and a towel to use at the beach
  10. Long clothing that covers your arms and legs to wear when visiting religious sites
  11. Light clothing to keep you comfortable in the heat
  12. Sunglasses and a hat
  13. Your driving licence and a road atlas if you are planning to rent a vehicle
  14. Your prescriptions if you are taking substantial quantities of prescription medications with you
  15. A notepad and pen so you can record your impressions of your trip
