Donjon Borgia (Italy)

Donjon Borgia, or Borgia Apartments, have been open to the public since the end of the 19th century. Their name comes from Pope Alexander VI, who had them built and who lived there. Their real name sounded Spanish: Rodrigo de Borja, which, said with an Italian accent, gave "Borgia"!

These apartments consist of 6 rooms and the paintings in 5 of them are the original ones and preserved very well. The painter who decorated these walls in the 1500s was Pinturicchio.

Today, these rooms also hold more recent religious works, whose creators were legendary: Gauguin, Chagall, Kandinsky... A genuine artistic concentrate which you'll appreciate during your trip to the Vatican !

Beyond the art present in these rooms, take the time to admire the architecture. Each ceiling is made differently; their vaults are unique and yet they follow the same guiding line. From the flat vault for the Room of the Sybils, to that called "barrel vault" in the Room of the Liberal Arts, they're all worth seeing!
