Yazd, an oasis of green in the middle of the Iranian central desert , is a city that dates back to the Sassanid era. Combining islamic and pre-islamic history with its still active Zoroastrian temple and its towers of silence where the dead were left to the vultures, this city at the gateway to the desert areas offers a quiet atmosphere.
Climbing to the top of the Amir Chaqmaq monument at sunset allowed me to see the city's roofs and its "badgir", the forerunner of the air conditioner. While going about the narrow streets of the old city, it has happened that I chance upon a small square bordered by a mosque or discover an old restored house acting as a hotel, like Oasis, where I recommend you go and relax while out on a walk and have tea and pastries in its inner court. 
On the outskirts of the city, visit the Dawlat Abad gardens for the coolness under the trees, and do not miss the Zoroastrian towers of silence. 
I strongly recommend that you use Yazd as a base for excursions into the surrounding desert , and go and discover old renovated caravanserails or the Zoroastrian pilgrimage site of Chak Chak, with its breathtaking panorama of the desert.
