Mount Batur is a volcano right in the heart of Bali whose summit culminates at over 5600 ft. It is a popular destination for treks that promises a superb sunrise on Bali's mountains.

My suggestion:
You will have a wonderful view of the volcano and lake from the Lakeview, a restaurant that offers an unlimited buffet at a fair price.
Summary:

Mount Batur will suit trekking enthusiasts , even if I have heard that the guide business is a bit of a mafia ring, so finding one is expensive and not always pleasant... Going with a local guide booked beforehand from Britain might be a good option. As for me, it is not the desire to do so that was lacking as I had already thoroughly enjoyed a few sunrises right here in Indonesia. Unfortunately, on Bali, there was not enough time and most of all, the weather was not very good.

So, I made do with a far off view of the sleeping volcano and its lake. You can see the blackened traces of the last eruption (dating from the year 2000). I suggest you let yourself be tempted by the descent of the road leading to Batur lake so you can observe it from close-up and go for a walk round the lake to admire the reflection of Mount Batur in it.

A still active volcano to the north of Bali, Mount Batur overlooks Lake Batur and is a preferred place of lovers of treks and hikes.

My suggestion:
For the trek, make sure that you have all the correct information (timetables, costs) and a suitable guide.
Summary:

Mount Batur volcano is impressive for its size and its powerful history. The guide explained to us that there have been several eruptions throughout the last century, sometimes very violent, with the last one in 1968. You can still see the flow of dried lava on the slopes of Mount Batur. Guided trips are like assembly lines there.

There's a buffet restaurant where all tourists are sent, the view is spectacular but in Bali it's best to avoid these places. The same goes for the lakeside, where the establishments pressure you to buy anything and everything!

The advantage: the view of the volcano from the surrounding mountains, the vertigo from the immensity of the place.

The disadvantage: it's a tourist factory... You even have to pay at the entrance of the road to reach it.
