Requesting a visa for Indonesia and Customs regulations

For tourist travel in Indonesia you can travel without a visa, or get a visa on arrival. It's easy and quick.

Before you leave

Before travelling to Indonesia, you need to make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months after the date of your departure. If you are going for a holiday of less than 30 days entering and leaving via specific airports you do not need a visa. As conditions in Indonesia can change quickly you are recommended to look www.indonesianembassy.org.uk for precise information. -

Getting a visa from the embassy

If you want to stay longer than 30 days, or don't fulfill the other conditions, you can request a visa before you travel from the Indonesian Embassy in London. It will cost £40 and is valid for 60 days from the date of your arrival. The current requirements are listed on the Indonesian Embassy's website www.indonesianembassy.org.uk. The visa takes three to six working days.

Visa on arrival

If you are staying for less than 30 days and not arriving at the prescribed airports or seaport for a visa free visit, you can apply for a tourist visa at any of the airports and seaports on the list on the Indonesian Embassy's website. It will cost $35 and is valid for 30 days. The visa can be extended once only for another 30 days by the immigration services. Do not exceed your visa's validity. You will be fined £15 a day!

Things you shouldn't take

You can enter Indonesia with 1 litre of alcohol and 200 cigarettes. It is strictly forbidden to import drugs, arms and munitions. Don't forget that drug smuggling carries the death penalty in Indonesia and that there are already people in prison for this. Medicine and documents in Chinese, x-rays, cassettes and pornographic publications are also forbidden. It is unlikely that you will be searched by the Customs Officers but you never know.

Airport Tax

There is an airport tax in Indonesia. So remember to keep some Rupiah for when you are leaving. You need to pay Rps 150,000 for an international flight from Denpasar on Bali, and between Rps 20,000 an 40,000 for an internal flight.
