Peten Itza is one of Guatemala's "great" lakes, the third largest in surface area, behind Lake Izabal and Lake Atitlan. Anyone <a href="/guatemala/">travelling to Guatemala</a> and entering the country from Chetumal (Mexico) and/or Belize will have the pleasure, like me, of enjoying the sight of its magnificent sunsets. The two most common places for tourists to stay are Flores Island and the village of El Remate. I spent a few days there in September 2012, during my first venture onto Guatemalan territory, staying in Flores, a festive and lively place, without being excessive. Trips on small motorboats ("lanchas") are offered; we were happy to just splash about in the lake and dive... Please be aware: nobody will tell you, but the lake is very polluted. A friend, who was with me on this trip, has sensitive skin... and she acquired some fungi!
