Extending along Georgia's northern border with Russia, the Greater Caucasus is an absolutely wonderful mountain range that marks the border between Europe and Asia in both a symbolic and a geographical sense. There are around ten peaks of over 5,000 metres in the range, with the highest, Mount Elbrus, lying on the Russian side of the border. As well as its incredible mountain landscapes, this region also gives the impression of being frozen in time, with the divine little mountain villages here still very traditional in character and largely untouched by the modern world – just like Armenia's monasteries, sitting perched in their inaccessible locations. All these things combine to make the Greater Caucasus region one of the essential places to visit in the country, and one of the main attractions of a trip to Georgia.
