Gogrulta is one of the villages in the Tusheti National Park that's hard to forget. Without electricity or water, you can't get there by car. I got there on the trail that runs along the opposite bank of the Tusheti Alazani River, via a steep path that leads down to the village of Dotchou, followed by an even steeper climb up the left bank.
Inhabited by rural shepherds and their families, who come here for the pastures, Gogroulta is a typical, traditional village, with a sanctuary dedicated to those who have passed away, houses built from dry stone, streams and mountain pastures.
It goes without saying that Gogrulta doesn't offer any modern comforts or sites to visit. But the authenticity, archaism and incredible setting of this village, which overlooks the Tusheti Alazani Canyon, makes it a must during a hike around the region. What's more, it's on the doorstep of the Tsovata, the easternmost valley in Georgia!
