Omalo is the modern Tusheti, Many people who live in houses in the distant villages come to spend part of their summer in Omalo where they often have a 'datcha' built in the Soviet era. In short, it's here that you'll meet the best of everybody, speak with villagers, plan trips out to the 'pampa'...Omalo is the life of Tusheti!
The annual festival of Tusheti (Tushetoba) takes place here towards mid August and here you can hear concerts, see jousts, games, horse races and other traditional pastimes. The village is quite central, in the heart of Chagma, but also on the borders of <a href="/georgia/holidays/places/3422-vallee-de-pirikiti/">Pirikiti</a> and Gometsari. It's there that you can get your supplies before going out walking.
But watch out! You shouldn't be happy to just see 'new' Omalo in the valley, the most lively and with the most inhabitants, which is a hamlet from the Soviet era where practically every village family has built themselves a villa to live in less rustic conditions. There is, on top of the hill, the old picturesque Omalo, a typical Tush village with a group of defensive towers which are remarkably well preserved and of which one contains an ethnographic museum which is highly exciting to visit.
