The archaeological park of San Agustin and its surroundings are fascinating and were one of the highlights of my trip to Colombia. You can explore the area and its Megalithic statues by foot, jeep or on horseback. I chose all three options as a way of plunging myself into the mysterious world these statues represent. The walk around this park was great fun but you have to follow the trails and you'll come across lots of tourists. The statues, however, are impressive and come in all shapes and sizes. If you tour by jeep, you'll be able to go further afield and see far more sights, including some magnificent waterfalls. My favourite part was going out on horseback. Three hours of trotting and galloping across hills was intense, but made me feel like an explorer uncovering these mysterious, hidden away statues for the first time. A must-do!

Though inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Agustín Archaeological Park actually receives few foreign tourists. The country's history is the cause for this, especially the parts of that history involving guerillas. Fortunately, however, this area is nowadays safe to visit. 
There are various ways to visit and explore the 500 statues at this exceptional archaeological site: by jeep, on horseback, or simply on foot! Note: keen hikers should enjoy it here. The megalithic statues of San Agustín Archaeological Park were created and erected here 5,000 years ago by the region's indigenous people and still hold many secrets to this day.
Measuring 20 metres in height on average, some of them depict human faces and others animals. As you go from one hill to the next, you can't help but be amazed when faced with these giants carved from tuff (a type of rock formed from volcanic ash). The entry pass allows to visit the park for two days, which is pretty much enough time to explore its whole extent, fromMeseta, on past the Lavapatas waterfall, and right up to the summit of Alto de Lavapatas, which is a hill located in the park. This is a recommended place to visit If you want to get away from the usual tourist circuit when visiting Colombia!
