Gyumri, the country's second largest town is situated to the northwest and is one of Armenia's most agreeable towns.

My suggestion:
Be warned that winters are long in Gyumri and the snow may last until April or May.
Summary:

In my opinion, Gyumri is the town that best reflects the influence of Russia and the Soviet Union in Armenia. It may be because of several name changes (Alexandropol/Alexander Town, then Leninakan/Lenin Town, before becoming Gyumri) or its architecture, wide avenues, squares and imposing Russian/Soviet-style buildings. Even so the town feels spacious, pleasant and welcoming.

Gyumri stands apart from other towns in the country, be it the local accent, its conservative appearance or the culinary specialities. I found it differs greatly from other areas in Armenia, as well as being very welcoming to travellers. Sadly, it suffered from a devasting earthquake in 1988 that still remains on people's lips today.

In short, Gyumri was a great stopover during my Armenian tour
