The ruin of the Amberd Fortress is 2300 m above sea level; it is a symbolic monument perched on top of a stony setting and at the foot of Mount Aragats. Just next to the Vahramashen church (11th century) is another architectural and scenic gem.

The Matenadaran is a highly symbolic museum in the centre of Yerevan which houses an irreplaceable and priceless collection of Medieval books and manuscripts. As well as a huge collection of works in Armenian, the Matenadaran also has numerous manuscripts in languages from all over the world. If you decide to take a guided tour, in English, a visit to the museum lasts about an hour and a half. Don't expect to spend time in dusty rooms filled with old texts, the book that you can see are mainly under glass and well preserved. Nevertheless, a visit to the Matenadaran made me understand how rich and important the collection is, and how many of these writings have been lost all over the world because of wars, invasions or religious conflicts.
