Reviews of Sisian

A smallish town in Syunik province, Sisian has limited tourist possibilities, but there are some good outings in the region.

My suggestion:
In the middle of town there is a history museum which has an interesting ethnological collection and photos of the 1931 earthquake.
Summary:

I went quickly through Sisian and to be honest had no real desire to stay there any longer. The fairly ordinary town is planned on a grid with a centre of Soviet buildings from the first half of the 20th century, and suburbs with concrete roads and rural houses. It's the entry point and most important town of the southern region of Syunik but if you are doing a tour of Armenia I recommend you go a bit further on, to Goris or the regional capital, Kapan.

On the other hand, Sisian does have the advantage of having several beautiful churches around it and there are some good walks in the surrounding area. Altogether then, not an unmissable place to visit, but if you are in the region it could be a welcome place to stop.

A small town deep in mysterious and wild nature.

My suggestion:
The mountain, lake and rock carvings of Ughtasar are all outstandingly beautiful and historically very interesting.
Summary:

Sisian is a modestly sized town,on the road to Goris and the legendary Tatev monastery, which although not very remarkable in itself, is ideally situated in one of the most beautiful regions. Somewhere you should go during a trip to Armenia.

I particularly liked Ughtasar, a lake with crystal clear water that appears at the end of a rather adventurously rocky road. Speaking of rocks, if you look closely at those around the lake you will find the Ughtasar rock carvingswhich are the star attraction of the area around Sisian. There are people, animals and strange scenes that were engraved onto the volcanic rocks some time between 2,000 and 5,000 years B.C.E. This little known site should also be visited for the beauty of the unusual valley.
