Armenia

How much to budget for when travelling to Armenia

If you're not too fussy about luxury and comfort, a trip to Armenia can work out to be very good value for money. As soon as you start looking for more luxury, however, it quickly becomes a more expensive destination to visit.

A trip to suit all budgets

As you travel around Armenia, you'll very quickly realise that this is not a country that receives large numbers of tourists. In fact, it's true to say that Armenia is hardly one of the first choices when it comes to classic travel destinations. Therefore, and like most places where this is the case, Armenia can quite definitely be travelled on a small budget, as long as you are happy to put up with fairly basic facilities that is. Once you start looking for something a bit more luxurious, prices tend to increase dramatically.

This is exactly the case with accommodation, for example, which costs next to nothing if you're prepared to put up with minimal levels of comfort, but can make a big dent in your budget as soon as you step through the doors of a more luxurious establishment.

Eating, however, is definitely very cheap. You'll be able to make excellent meals for very little expense, and expensive, luxury restaurants are a rare sight. Getting around using public transport, taxis, etc., in Armenia is also very cheap.

A few example prices

Prices for accommodation in Armenia start at between 4,000 and 10,000 Armenian dram (£5.50 to £14). A night in a double room for a couple costs between 16,000 and 40,000 dram (£22 to £55). If you want the height of luxury in Armenia, you'll likely have to pay between 43,000 et 54,000 dram (£60 to £75), and sometimes even more if you choose to stay at one of the large international hotels.

When it comes to eating in Armenia, the types of local restaurants popular with the Armenians themselves serve complete and absolutely delicious meals for prices varying between 2,000 and 4,000 dram (£2.75 to £5.50). And even at these kinds of prices, the servings are usually huge. If you prefer to eat at your hotel, it will probably cost you around 4,000 to 6,000 dram (£5.50 to £8.30) for a complete meal. There are very few posh restaurants in Armenia. A meal at one of the ones in the capital can cost as much as 27,000 dram (£37).
