The first time I crossed the frontier at Cerro Castillo I remember being very surprised at this tiny office perched in the middle of the steppe, and worrying about the Argentine and Chilean customs officers who had to live in a place that is so isolated from the world. Be aware, <a href="/chile/">when you are travelling to Chile</a>, that the customs officers are very particular and it is strictly forbidden to take fruit or other fresh food into the country in your suitcase. Their inspection is meticulous. In Cerro Castillo you can eat something, buy some postcards and other souvenirs and get petrol. Then get back on the road and bask in the large open spaces of Patagonia!

I hitched a ride from Coyahique in the morning, intending to cross Lake General Carerra to go to Chile Chico. The ferry was at the end of the afternoon so I had all the afternoon in front of me and decided to stop at Villa Cerro Castillo to look at the mountain that is famous for its beauty, and for the peaks shaped like the castle for which it is named ("castillo" means "castle " in Spanish). Villa Cerro Castillo is very very quiet. I had plenty of time to look at the jagged peaks of Cerro which really are impressive. The place is strikingly beautiful. I was just going to walk for a bit along the famous Sendero de Chile when I realised that I had absolutely no time! Too bad, I had to be content with looking at the mountain from a distance. While waiting I got hungry and i went and got an enormous sandwich in the only restaurant that was open in the village (no point being too picky about the menu either...).

Cerro Castillo is the highest point in the natural park with the same name. The Carretera Austral passes through it, as well as the Sendero de Chile. For all hikers!
